Spurs one of seven Premier League teams looking at Swedish full-back

0 1

Signing a new left-back is thought to be high on Tottenham Hotspur’s to-do list, but one target they have in mind is also on the radar of almost half the clubs in the Premier League.

Why do Spurs need a left-back?

Ordinarily, Destiny Udogie is Ange Postecoglou‘s first choice for the left-back role. Since he linked up with Spurs last summer, the young Italian has impressed many with the way he has adapted to the demands of the Premier League.

Udogie’s marauding runs forward down the left, operating as an inverted, adventurous full-back, has made him the ideal fit for Postecoglou’s system.

But, with a couple of injury issues, the risk of fatigue, and mistakes creeping into his game, it simply makes sense that one of Tottenham’s top transfer targets would be a left-back.

Another Swede heading for Spurs?

The latest name to be linked with the Lilywhites in that area is Daniel Svensson, who currently plays for Norwegian outfit Nordsjaelland.

According to TBRFootball, Tottenham are one of seven Premier League clubs that have taken a look at Svensson recently.

Apparently, Brighton were interested in the summer but opted to sign Ferdi Kadioglu instead. Now, Spurs are joined by Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, Aston Villa, and Brentford in tracking the Sweden Under-21 star.

Svensson himself has admitted he is likely to “move on relatively soon,” suggesting he could leave in January, or at the very least make a switch next summer. He has insisted he is ready for the step up, and wants to find a team that has a solid plan in place for his development.

Left-back has to be a priority

Of all the areas Spurs still need to improve and add depth to, it would seem left-back is the key role that needs that additional strengthening as soon as possible. Giving Udogie someone to genuinely compete with is important, and will also take a lot of pressure off the fitness of the Italian, too.
