Patriots Starting Drake Maye Against Texans ‘Absolute Desperation Play’

The Patriots will turn to rookie Drake Maye against the Houston Texans on Sunday.

It’s safe to say there’s a contingent of people who think that’s a bad idea.

George Balekji and Travis Thomas discussed their opinion regarding the move on NESN’s “Foxboro Rush” podcast on Wednesday, with the former giving a declarative statement about what he believes shifting toward the rookie will mean.

“It’s an absolute desperation play by the Patriots’ front-office, and the Patriots’ coaching staff,” Balekji said. “It’s going to be a disaster on Sunday. You’ve had, through five games, five different starting offensive line combinations through five games. You have backup in four of the five spots, including a center that’s still getting used to playing the position.

“… The Patriots’ offensive line allows a league-high 48% pressure on drop backs. The Texans lead the NFL in pressures, on 42% of drop backs.”

New England has options to help Maye find success, but given what we’ve seen from his supporting cast both on and off the field, we aren’t holding our breath.
