People are doubting Ange Postecoglou, and that’s absolutely fine – opinion

This time last year, the Tottenham fanbase, pundits, and neutral fans were fawning over Ange Postecoglou. Now, the tides have started to turn, and many have begun questioning his methods, but that will suit the Spurs boss down to the ground.

A familiar pattern for Postecoglou

The truth is, this happens everywhere Postecoglou goes. Most notably, this exact pattern of public perception occurred during his time at Celtic, and we all know how that ended.

His teams have always been inconsistent at first, showcasing incredible attacking prowess and slick counter-attacking moves, while being incredibly open and vulnerable in defence.

Ultimately, pundits begin to question whether Postecoglou’s seeming reluctance to deviate from the plan is more harmful and foolish than commendable and brave. They insist that Postecoglou and his players need to try something else and stop being naive.

But, gradually, things always start to fall into place. Good performances become good results. The system works, and trophies soon follow.

Essentially, just like at Celtic, Postecoglou and the Spurs players should (and will) ignore the outside noise and remain committed to the plan. The man himself has seen it work in the past and knows it will again. It’s clear the players trust him, too.

Spurs are improving

All the signs are there already in the early stages of this season that Postecoglou’s system is working. Sure, there may have been two disappointing defeats to Newcastle and Arsenal, but Spurs were very much in those games, if not the better team.

In the wins over Brentford and Qarabag, the Lilywhites have been far more clinical and it’s proven to be the difference, with two highly impressive displays from the team to get those wins. The win over Manchester United was so good that it seems to have stemmed the tide of criticism for now – until the next defeat, of course.

Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas shared some metrics (before the recent run of four wins in a row) which showed Spurs had improved defensively, were becoming more physically dominant, and had slightly improved in pressing and possession stats, too. The only thing lacking was goals.

Now, with Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson firing on all cylinders and confidence flowing through the team, that piece of the puzzle has been found.

Give it time, success will come

So, let the doubters make their ominous predictions about the project falling apart and Ange getting the chop. As long as the Spurs board are patient — which it seems they actually will be — Postecoglou will deliver on his promise of bringing success to the club.

Anyone who can’t already see that things are moving in the right direction is wilfully ignoring the obvious signs of progression and promise flowering on the pitch this season.
