Veliz highly rated in the game

While Veliz’s first season in Europe did not go according to plan, the youngster is highly thought of in footballing circles, which is why Tottenham paid £13m to sign him from Rosaria Central, which is quite a high fee for a young player plying his trade in Argentina.

The centre-forward is yet to make his mark in this continent, which is why he will be keen to show during his spell at Espanyol that he has the qualities to shine at the highest level.

The striker has got regular minutes since his loan switch to the Catalan club, having found the back of the net once so far this season.

Gonzalez’s words of praise for Veliz

After four consecutive starts for Espanyol, Veliz had to make do with a place on the bench for their clash against Real Madrid last Sunday, although he did come on in the interval.

It was a difficult day in the office for the 21-year-old, who struggled to get into the game as Los Blancos emerged 4-1 winners.

Despite being dropped from the team, Gonzalez believes that Veliz has the character to bounce back, remarking that the on-loan Tottenham man is a fighter.

The Espanyol boss told Mundo Deportivo: “Alejo is fine. He is very young, has a great career and that is the way he competes. He makes the centre-backs uncomfortable; he wins many duels, he creates a lot of second chances.

“He goes out to compete and is focused on having a good year. In that aspect he is mature, you can see that he doesn’t protest too much.”

Postecoglou will be paying close attention

Ange Postecoglou and the Tottenham hierarchy will be watching with interest to see how Veliz gets on at Espanyol and how he develops over the course of the season.

With Richarlison continuing to struggle with injuries, a spot might open up in the Spurs first-team squad for a suitable backup to Dominic Solanke next season.

Veliz is not the only young striker contending for such a spot, with Will Lankshear also catching the eye at Hotspur Way over the past 12 months.
