Solanke is a proper striker

There had been much debate about who would make the starting lineup for Tottenham‘s opening game in the Europa League this week, but Dominic Solanke was given the nod, and he did not disappoint.

The frontman came out of the game with an assist, another goal to add to his tally, and praise from fans and pundits alike for yet another hardworking performance.

While goals are obviously very important for any striker, the new signing has hit the ground running with his pressing from the front and tireless work for his teammates around him. It is this that has got Ange Postecoglou smiling when it comes to Solanke of late.

Discussing the game with TNT Sports (via BBC Sport), Postecoglou touched on Solanke’s involvement, and said: “He has been great for us Dom. He went through that long drought of two games without a goal! He has been fantastic for us not just goals, but his link-up plays. He is a typical striker.

“He is still working his way back to full fitness.”

The floodgates are open

Now with two goals in two games, the confidence is clearly flowing for Solanke. He spoke to the BBC after the win over Brentford last weekend about the importance of that first goal and how he intends to push on and keep improving now.

A report from GiveMeSport prior to the Qarabag game suggested Spurs would stick with Solanke in the starting lineup as Postecoglou was keen to give his striker confidence and put some momentum together after his injury.

Dominic Solanke understands the system

It is clear that Solanke has come into this Tottenham side and completely gets what is expected of him as a central striker. He is not just there to put the ball in the net, he is there to press from the front, to win back the ball as quickly as possible for his team, to be a nuisance and cause disruption for opponents.

As per WhoScored data, Solanke has been putting in 1.8 tackles per 90 minutes so far this season, and he’s racked up a 75% passing accuracy rate. So, he’s getting stuck in, he’s bringing teammates into the game, and he’s scoring goals. We couldn’t ask for more.
