Dominic Solanke’s stats from Qarabag win show just how good he was

0 3

Spurs got their Europa League campaign off to a winning start against Qarabag on Thursday night, and Dominic Solanke was at the heart of everything positive for the Lilywhites. Looking at his stats on the night prove just how effective he was in a star performance.

A goal and an assist for Solanke

It was a wild night at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, from the Azerbaijan outfit showing up late and the kick-off being delayed, to Radu Dragusin picking up a straight red card within seven minutes.

But, the Tottenham team put in a professional and clinical performance, and no one exemplified that more than Dominic Solanke.

The Spurs striker bagged another goal to make it two in two games, and also got the game moving early on with a fine assist for Brennan Johnson to keep up his own goalscoring streak.

Two goal contributions is obviously a very clear success for Solanke, but looking deeper at his numbers on the night, it’s clear to see just how integral he was to the win.

As per WhoScored data, Solanke registered two shots and one key pass during his 85 minutes on the pitch, which is included in his impressive 86.4% passing accuracy rate from a total of 22 passes. He was also fouled once, completed two dribbles, and won one aerial duel.

Perhaps most impressive, though, is his defensive work. Solanke made two tackles, one interception, and one clearance, proving his game is not just about the goals.

Solanke made himself a nuisance

Diving deeper, thanks to Fotmob data, we can see that Solanke had 44 touches through the game, four of which were in the opposition’s box. He made two passes into the final third, got both of his shots on target, and performed slightly better than his xG of 0.93.

Again, it is in the more resilient and dogged aspects of his game that Solanke excelled, though. Logging four defensive actions, including three ball recoveries, it’s easy to see just how hard-working the performance from the forward was.

He won four duels in total, including three ground duels. All of this led to a rating of 8.2 out of 10 for Solanke, the second-highest score on the pitch after Guglielmo Vicario.

Tailor-made for Postecoglou

Ange Postecoglou has already made it clear how happy he is with Solanke, and it’s not hard to see why. The Spurs boss finally has the kind of striker who is not only going to be in the right place at the right time to bag goals, but will also work his socks off for the team.

It’s exciting to think that Solanke is only just getting started, and has just come back from injury, too. Once he’s back at full sharpness, and with the goals flowing, we could see a truly special season from the 27-year-old.
