The Europe League has entered a new format

Spurs kickstart their Europe League campaign with a clash against Qarabag at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season and while Ange Postecoglou‘s will be setting their sights on glory, they would be aware that the competition is now a lot tougher to win than in previous editions.

This is because, the tournament enters a new format, with each team having to play eight group matches instead of six, all against different opponents.

All 36 teams competing in the competition will be ranked in the same table, with the top eight sides directly qualifying to the round of 16. Sides finishing from ninth to 24th place will enter an additional play-off round for a chance to make it to the pre-quarterfinals.

Supercomputer predicts winner of the Europa League

According to Opta’s supercomputer (via The Daily Mail), Spurs are extremely likely to make it to the knockout stages, being handed a 81 per cent chance of doing so.

Tottenham are given a 51 per cent chance of making it to the quarterfinal, a 29.1 per cent chance of making it to the final four, a 16.6 per cent chance of making the final and an 8.6 per cent chance of winning it.

According to these calculations, Ange Postecoglou‘s men are more likely to lift the trophy than fellow Premier League side, Manchester United, who have been handed a 7.1 per cent chance of going all the way.

No Europa League trophy for Spurs this season

The supercomputer picks Porto as the most likely winner of the competition, giving them a 17.8 per cent chance of being Champions.

It is predicted Atletico Bilbao will make the final, which will be held at San Mames, with the La Liga club handed a 10.9 per cent chance of winning it in their own stadium.

Quite interestingly, Opta rank Slavia Prague in third place, just ahead of Spurs, giving the Czech side a 9.6 per cent chance of Europa League glory.

Fans will be hoping that the prediction is wrong given the fact that Tottenham have drawn Manchester City in the Carabao Cup fourth round, which will prove to be another difficult obstacle to end the long wait for silverware.
