Spurs were interested in Denmark international this summer – Fabrizio Romano

Many suspected Tottenham Hotspur would sign a new full-back over the summer, but no such transfer happened. Now, Fabrizio Romano has named one of the club’s targets and explained why Spurs didn’t push ahead to sign him.

Lecce star was overpriced

With the departures of Emerson Royal and Ryan Sessegnon this summer, Spurs are looking pretty thin on the ground in the full-back department.

Of course, the revival of Djed Spence‘s career at the club has helped matters, and new signing Archie Gray can also fill in at right-back.

Still, it came as something of a surprise that the Lilywhites didn’t add a new full-back to their squad this summer. Plenty of names were linked with a move to London, but a new name has surfaced after the transfer window closed.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Lecce defender Patrick Dorgu was on Tottenham’s list, but the Italian side priced the player out of a move to Spurs after asking for between £25-29m.

Romano tweeted: “Understand Tottenham had Lecce full-back Patrick Dorgu on their shortlist this summer. Chelsea also considered signing 2004 born left-back via Strasbourg in July. Talks didn’t advance as Lecce wanted more than €30/35m for Dorgu who has scored his first goal for Denmark this week.”

Spurs are short on options

The lack of recognised full-backs at the club has become a bigger topic of discussion over the last week thanks to Ange Postecoglou naming his Europa League squad and leaving Spence out.

Ben Davies, who operates largely as a centre-half now, will be the backup left-back to Destiny Udogie in that competition, it seems.

Spurs Web Opinion

I would hope that a new left-back will be our top priority in the January transfer window, or at the very least next summer. We cannot expect Ben Davies to fill in there, no offence to him, as he is simply not right for the inverted full-back role.
