Andy Hinchcliffe believes Brennan Johnson was the most threatening Tottenham player against Newcastle and insisted that his teammates should have got on the end of the winger’s crosses.

Brennan Johnson was benched against Newcastle

Johnson was left out of Tottenham’s starting eleven by Ange Postecoglou after two poor displays against Leicester City and Everton.

However, the winger was brought on at half-time when Spurs were 1-0 down in place of Pape Matar Sarr as the Spurs boss went for the kill.

The change did work, with the pacy wide-man looking threatening down the right and having a key hand in Tottenham’s goal, with his effort turned into the back of his own net by Dan Burn.

However, Johnson and the other Spurs forwards once again failed to make most of their opportunities in the final third, with their final pass and finish letting them down.

Brennan Johnson was Tottenham’s shining light

After the Wales international whipped a dangerous cross into the six-yard box during stoppage time, Hinchcliffe criticised his Tottenham teammates for not busting a lung to get on the end of it.

The pundit told Sky Sports (1/9; 15:25): “The pace of Johnson gets him away, it’s just his teammates can’t keep up with him, can’t get into the six-yard box to get on the end of the cross. It’s fair to say Brennan Johnson’s been Tottenham’s best player and he’s only played half the match.”

It has been a feature of Johnson’s Tottenham career that he has always looked a lot more threatening when coming on from the bench than when he is starting.

Had Dominic Solanke been fit, he could have put away a couple of the crosses that the 23-year-old played into the box at St James’ Park.
