Postecoglou confirms Spurs star was subbed off to avoid injury in ‘hamstrings and calves’

Tottenham Hotspur ran away with it in their first home game of the season today, trouncing Everton 4-0. Speaking after the game, Ange Postecoglou was in positive spirits, but had some potentially bad news about one Spurs player.

Destiny Udogie feeling fatigued

After a disappointing draw against Leicester on Monday night, Spurs needed to pull a big performance out of the bag this afternoon, and they did just that.

A similarly bright start from the Lilywhites, but this time Postecoglou‘s side were far more clinical in front of goal and punished a lacklustre Everton side.

Yves Bissouma made huge steps towards redeeming himself for his recent behaviour with a wonderful long-range goal to get things started, before Heung-min Son stole the ball from Jordan Pickford to double the lead.

In the second half, Spurs continued their dominance and made it count, with a Cristian Romero header and a slick finish from Son making it four and securing all three points.

But, there is one bit of bad news to accompany the result: Destiny Udogie is not at full fitness. Discussing the match in his post-match press conference, Postecoglou explained why the defender was brought off after 72 minutes, and revealed there is a bit of soreness for Udogie.

He said (via Football.London): “Destiny was a bit sore. Tiredness in both hamstrings and calves. He was really fatigued last week as well and we’re trying to build up his minutes.”

Lack of pre-season detrimental for Destiny

Udogie underwent surgery at the end of last season, meaning he missed Euro 2024 with Italy and the majority of Tottenham’s pre-season preparations, too.

A report from The Standard last weekend claimed Udogie was passed fit to start the Leicester game, where he played a full 90 minutes.

Spurs Web Opinion

It sounds like this was merely precautionary from Postecoglou, and I’m sure Udogie will be fine. He didn’t look sluggish or anything in the game, but taking him off when we’ve already won the game is a smart move and should mean he’s good to go again next weekend.
