Report: Daniel Levy scared off Real Madrid with a £150m price tag this summer

Tottenham insider Paul O’Keefe has revealed that Real Madrid enquired about Cristian Romero earlier this year, only to baulk at the fee that Daniel Levy demanded for the centre-back.

Earlier this summer, reports from Spain claimed that Real Madrid were keen on securing Romero’s services and were hoping that the centre-back would do his part to push for a move (Estadio Deportivo).

However, the rumour quickly died down and the defender put any suggestions of a potential summer to rest a few days ago, telling ESPN that he is not thinking about a move away from the club and that he is focused on winning titles with Tottenham.

He said: “I always strive to play at my best. I have a lot of respect for Tottenham. They’ve always given me a lot of support here, so I like playing here.

“I don’t think about other clubs or their possibilities. I know there’s a lot of talk about a possible move, but I’m calm.

“At my club, I play differently to the national team, more forward. I still have years left in Europe and I want to see where I can go. Hopefully this year we can win a title at Tottenham.”

Real Madrid’s failed attempt

O’Keefe has now revealed on Last Word on Spurs that Los Blancos did reach out to Spurs earlier this year to ask about Romero.

He revealed that the La Liga giants tested the waters to see if Spurs would be open to selling their vice-captain.

However, Daniel Levy allegedly quoted a price of £150m for the former Atalanta man, following which Madrid never returned.

Tottenham may be in a tricky situation with Romero next summer if he does not sign a new deal before then as he will only have two years left on his contract.

Hopefully, the club challenge for honours this season, convincing the Argentine to commit his long-term future at N17.
