Opinion: Player ratings from Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in pre-season

Tottenham Hotspur lost their first match of pre-season this afternoon, falling to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Eric Dier and Bayern Munich in South Korea.

Let’s take a look at how the individual players got on:

Tottenham player ratings vs Bayern Munich

Guglielmo Vicario – 6 – It’s a hard one to score. On the one hand, he gifted Bayern an early goal with a woeful pass into Spence. On the other hand, he made numerous saves to keep it at 1-0 for so long.

Pedro Porro – 8 – Tottenham’s best player on the day, which isn’t saying too much. Porro at least showed some moments of quality and creativity on the ball. Then he ripped a Pedro Porro special into the top corner to bring Spurs back into the game. That’s become something of a trademark!

Radu Dragusin – 6 – His first full 45 minutes since returning for pre-season. Struggled with the pace of the Bayern front three and gave the ball away more often than he would have liked. Some nice tackles and a few good positive passes in there though.

Ben Davies – 4 – Up against the pace of the Bayern front line, Davies was all over the place. This system just really isn’t set up for him so I’m not too sure what his role will be this season.

Djed Spence – 6 – Struggled with his defensive duties at times in the first half and did little to get forward and help the attack. Much better in the second half with some really dangerous inverted charges down the pitch.

Archie Gray – 4 – Really struggled against a higher calibre of opposition today. Gave the ball away far too much and so many of his passes were intercepted. It’s all a learning process for him, of course.

Pape Matar Sarr – 5 – Showed his best work in the press, creating an early chance on the break for Spurs. A little sloppy in possession and missed Tottenham’s best chance of the game with a one-on-one against Neuer.

James Maddison – 5 – Didn’t get into the game at all during that opening 45 minutes. Spurs need him to take games like this by the scruff of the neck but he barely got a kick.

Brennan Johnson – 5 – Wasn’t as involved in the game once again today. Brennan Johnson’s runs in behind and low crosses into the box are usually a feature of Spurs under Postecoglou but we haven’t seen them at all for the last two games.

Dejan Kulusevski – 7 – Played up front once again today. Feel a little sorry for him because he gets bullied by centre-backs at times, but you can’t question the effort he puts in. Much better in a number 10 role, in my opinion. Created a couple of half-chances for himself and at least looked dangerous at times.

Heung-min Son – 6 – Saw quite a lot of the ball but struggled to turn possession in the final third into actual shots on target or meaningful crosses.

Second-half Substitutes:

Lucas Bergvall – 8 – A fantastic second-half performance from Bergvall. Played with real swagger out there, and was at the heart of every good Spurs move. His touch seems so effortless and he creates so much time and space for himself, even in tight areas.

Yves Bissouma – 7 – Made a big difference to the Spurs midfield, which had struggled a lot in the first 45. Tottenham need him back at his best this season.

Emerson Royal – 6 – Some more front-foot defending from Emerson Royal. He has actually been one of Tottenham’s best performers over the last two matches.

Oliver Skipp – 6 – Came on to cover in both central midfield and central defence. Nothing to write home about but kept things neat and tidy when Spurs were on top.

Jamie Donley – 6.5 – Looks really at home in that inverted left-back role. I really do wonder whether he will be Destiny Udogie’s understudy now this season.

Alfie Devine – 7.5 – A creative spark in the second half for Spurs down the right-hand-side. His clever passes in behind and flicks around the corner created all kinds of problems for Bayern.

Mikey Moore – 7 – Struck up a real partnership with Devine down the right. Mikey Moore seems to produce a moment of magic or two every time he steps onto the pitch at the moment.

Brandon Austin – 6 – Had very little to do after coming on for the last 25 minutes. He did make a couple of neat stops from a tight angle in the final few minutes though.

Will Lankshear – 6.5 – Some nice hold-up play in the final 20 minutes, linking up nicely with the likes of Devine, Moore, and Werner.

Timo Werner – 6 – Full of energy and running down the left side. I suspect his role this season will be exactly that, coming on for the final 30 minutes and running in behind defenders.

George Abbott – 6 – Only played the last 15 minutes but showed real energy overlapping down the right as a makeshift full-back.
