Tottenham Hotspur announce permanent transfer for 21-year-old midfielder

There have been far more departures than arrivals at Tottenham Hotspur so far this summer, and the latest sees a top Under-21 player moving on to play in Spain with a permanent transfer.

Yago Santiago heading back to Spain

The club has confirmed Yago Santiago, a prominent member of the Premier League 2-winning side of last season, has left Tottenham permanently to join Spanish second-division outfit, Elche.

A statement from the club wishes Santiago the best for the future and celebrates his achievements with Wayne Burnett‘s side last term.

Santiago registered nine goals and eight assists as the Lilywhites youth team topped the Premier League 2 table and went on to win the play-offs (Transfermarkt).

Santiago wishes he had made his senior debut at Spurs

Taking to social media, Santiago shared a heartfelt message reading: “After five years representing this football club, it’s time to say goodbye. It’s been an amazing journey, learning and growing every day with great people next to me.

“I want to thank the academy who gave me the opportunity when I was only 16; coaches, physios, teammates, all the staff involved. I will be forever grateful to the people who really helped me and trusted me during my period at Tottenham.

“A big thank you to the fans for your unconditional support. I would have liked to make my professional debut here, this is a really special club for me and my family, but I will keep all the moments and people in my heart. I wish success, luck, and all the best in the future.”

Santiago made the bench five times for Spurs but never got onto the pitch for his debut.

Spurs Web Opinion

This is a real shame as Santiago is a really talented player who has a bright future ahead of him.

I guess with the likes of Mikey Moore and soon Min-hyuk Yang operating in a similar role, the pipeline just wasn’t right for him, but he should smash it out in Spain now.
