How to pronounce Yang Min-hyuk – The South Korean ace tipped to join Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur look to have secured the services of South Korean youngster Min-hyuk Yang after his impressive performances for Gangwon FC in the K-League.

The Yang Min-hyuk story so far

Yang has attracted interest from England, with Korean sources announcing last month that he was linked with a ‘top Premier League club’ (@KORFootballNews).

It has now been revealed that the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will become the 18-year-old’s new home, with Fabrizio Romano giving his trademark ‘here we go’ on the young winger, who is expected to join Spurs from January 2025 (FabrizioRomano).

Yang became the youngest K-League scorer since 2013 earlier this year when he scored in his second senior match, after getting an assist on his league debut (Football.London).

With eight goals and four assists in 25 K-League appearances, he will be relishing the chance to test himself on the big stage (Transfer Markt).

How to pronounce Yang Min-hyuk

In Korea, the family name comes before the name given to the individual. Although Tottenham’s Korean captain is commonly called Heung-Min-Son by most Spurs supporters, the correct pronunciation order is actually Son-Heung-Min.

The same principle applies to Yang’s name. Korean journalist Sungmo Lee confirmed to Football.London journalist Alasdair Gold that the new signing’s name should be pronounced Yang Min-hyuk, not Min-hyuk Yang.

Phonetically, it should be pronounced: “Yang-Min-H-yook” and the yook sound should rhyme with book.

Yang Min-hyuk is a player I have little knowledge on, but the reports from his home country sound positive.

Postecoglou managed in the J-League and signed three K-League players when he was in charge of Celtic – including Gangwon FC’s Yang Hyun-jun – so he knows the players over there well (BBC).

Hopefully, Yang will prove to be another promising player for Tottenham’s future.
