Report: Injury setback may put Tottenham’s hopes of landing transfer target in doubt

Any hope that Tottenham Hotspur may have held of securing a deal for Ivan Toney may have become a little more complicated.

Ivan Toney’s future at Brentford may have just taken a twist

Brentford have revealed that club-record signing Igor Thiago, who is considered to be Ivan Toney‘s successor has suffered a knee issue which the Bees fear could keep him out of the first few weeks of the new Premier League season (The Athletic).

Thiago felt discomfort around the meniscus in his right knee after coming off at half time in last Saturday’s friendly against AFC Wimbledon and missed the fixture against Benfica in Portugal last night.

The 23-year-old netted twice against their League Two opponents at the weekend and underwent a scan earlier this week, with a further scan pencilled in for next week while undergoing physiotherapy on his knee.

Thiago, who joined from Belgian outfit Bruges for €36.5million in February has already been ruled out of a behind-closed-doors friendly against Estrela da Amadora on July 30.

Brentford have a decision to make on Toney

The injury could mean that if Thiago is ruled out for a considerable period, Brentford may decide to keep hold of Toney, who has been linked with a move to Tottenham (The Sun).

The England international is in the final year of his contract at the Gtech Community Stadium, however, it is said that Brentford do not need to sell him.

Thomas Frank’s side are reported to value the frontman at more than £50m, having seen his valuation drop from between £80million and £100million last summer.

This could certainly end any hope which Tottenham may have had of looking to drive Toney’s price tag down further with Brentford facing the prospect of being without their two main striking options if they sanctioned his exit.

Tottenham need to start moving quickly and going for their main target, whether that be Toney, Jonathan David or another option – the season will soon be upon us and players need time to adapt to Ange Postecoglou‘s expectations of his players.
