Serie A club director expresses intention to keep hold of Spurs target

Bologna sporting director Marco Di Vaio has said that the club hope to keep hold of all their key players, including Tottenham target Riccardo Calafiori.

Tottenham have been linked with Riccardo Calafiori

Calafiori was already a wanted man across Italy and the rest of Europe on the back of his impressive displays last season. He has further cemented his status as one of the best young defenders in the world with his displays at the Euros.

The 21-year-old has arguably been the Azzurri’s best player in the competition so far and Tottenham continue to be mooted as a potential destination for the left-footed centre-back

Last week, Tutto Juve revealed that Spurs are ‘rushing towards’ Calafiori and would have ‘no problem’ meeting Bologna’s asking price of €40m-€45m (£33.7m-£38m) for the former Basil man.

However, it was explained that Juventus remain the favourite to land the Italy international, who is keen to unite with Thiago Motta at the Allianz Stadium.

Bologna are not in a rush to sell Riccardo Calafiori

Di Vaio has now spoken about Calafiori’s performances at the Euros and expressed the club’s intention to keep him at the Renato Dall’Ara Stadium.

The Bologna director told Gazzetta dello Sport (as relayed by Calcio Bologna) about the centre-back’s showing in Germany so far: It’s not a surprise to us, we know him well and we know he can make those plays.

“We had been following him for years and he was recovering from a knee problem, but Basel is a hotbed of interesting players and in fact we also signed Ndoye.

“Keep Calafiori? The market dynamics will have an important boost after the European Championships but the intention is to keep everyone.”

Calafiori and Italy are next in action on Saturday evening (17:00 UK) when they face Switzerland in the round of sixteen stage.

Spurs Web Opinion

This is quite a vague answer from Di Vaio and is far from a defiant stance.

It sounds like Bologna want to wait until the Euros are over so that they can get maximum value for Calafiori, with a bidding war likely to emerge for the centre-back.
