Journalist Graeme Bailey has revealed that rumoured Tottenham target Nico Williams is demanding a huge salary from interested clubs and that his wage demands have put off Liverpool from a move.

Ange Postecoglou confirmed on Wednesday following Tottenham’s friendly against Newcastle in Melbourne that the Lilywhites will look to strengthen their forward line this summer (Football.London).

One of the names on their wishlist is thought to be Willaims, who appears to have come of age this season, with the winger having managed seven goals and 17 assists across all competitions for Athletic Club (Transfermarkt).

The 21-year-old is thought to have a release clause of €50m (£42.8m) and it has been widely reported over the last month or so that Tottenham are keeping a close eye on the youngster (The Telegraph).

Spurs are not the only ones monitoring the Spain international, with the likes of Aston Villa (GiveMeSport), Barcelona (Football Espana) and Liverpool (HITC) also being credited with an interest in the wide-man.

Nico Williams wants huge wages to transfer this summer

However, Bailey has now revealed that the Athletic Club star is demanding a quarter of a million pounds per week to sign on the dotted line, which is likely to rule out Liverpool from the race.

When asked about the Reds’ interest in Williams, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “They won’t pay him what he’s looking for at the moment. He’d be Liverpool’s highest-paid player, as he would if he went to any club in England.

“He’s been asking for £250,000 per week plus appearance money. The English clubs who like him, and they all like him a lot, they think he’s a terrific player, but it seems as if he’s edging towards Barcelona. So, I think that’s what they’re putting it down to really.

“Will the situation change? Possibly. But at this moment in time, it doesn’t look as if he’s pushing to come to England which is part of the reason for his demands. Liverpool very much like him, he’s a top winger, top performer. Liverpool were one of the ones who have done their homework on him.”

£250k per week demands would also likely rule Tottenham out of the race for Williams as there is no way the North London side would consider making the winger their highest-paid player. That might be why the speculation linking the 21-year-old with a move to Spurs has cooled over recent weeks.
