Jurgen Klopp jokes he has not liked one Tottenham star since 2019

Jurgen Klopp has joked that he has been annoyed with James Maddison since 2019 after the now-Tottenham midfielder allowed Manchester City to score against Leicester City in what was a crucial moment in the title race.

Son Heung-min’s miss in the 85th minute against Manchester City will live in the memories of Arsenal fans for a long time, with many perhaps remembering that as the moment that cost them the title if Pep Guardiaol’s men manage to beat West Ham in the final day of the season.

Liverpool fans had a similar moment back in 2019, with City beating the Reds to the tile by just two points in the end.

During the title run-in, there was one game in particular where the Manchester club were really struggling against Leicester City at home.

The game looked destined to end in a draw but Vincent Kompany scored what was undoubtedly the best goal of his career to hand City a 1-0 win and send his side on their way to the title.

Jurgen Klopp holds a grudge against James Maddison

Klopp noted that it was Maddison who failed to close Kompany down before the Belgian unleashed the strike into the top corner and joked that he has been upset with the England international since that day.

The German coach told RedmenTV about the incident: “I’m really happy that I didn’t get a stroke in that moment. That’s how it must feel. I know exactly how I was, lying on the sofa, watching and thinking: ‘Maddison! Maddison, block him, close him down…’ [He didn’t and Kompany scored]

“Since then, I don’t like Maddison. And I was angry with Brendan (Rodgers) that day because he should’ve taken him off, he was tired. Leicester played a really good first half.

“After that, they should’ve scored. So it’s just a personal thing. Of course, I have no problem, but it’s like when I see him… I saw him [Maddison] again last weekend.”

In closely contested title races, it often comes back to little moments throughout the season that sway things one way or the other.

I always look back on the goal we conceded late on against West Brom at White Hart Lane in the 2015-16 season as the big moment that cost us the title that campaign.

We should have put that game to bed, given the chances we had and had we won it, the pressure would have been immense on the Foxes and they could have easily crumbled.
