Paul Robinson urges Spurs to sign 27-year-old over Newcastle star

Paul Robinson believes that Brentford striker Ivan Toney would be a better fit for Tottenham Hotspur than Newcastle Unitd’s Alexander Isak.

Spurs Web has relayed a number of reports over the past few months that backed the Lilywhites to enter the market for a marquee number nine this summer (Football Insider).

One of the names mooted as a target is Isak, who has been exceptional since arriving in the Premier League in the summer of 2022.

It was reported by The Sun at the start of April that Newcastle might have to sell some of their players in order to comply with FFP regulations and that they are bracing themselves for offers from both Tottenham and Arsenal for their star striker.

Meanwhile, the speculation linking Toney, who has just one year left on his contract, with a move to Spurs shows no signs of dissipating ahead of the summer.

Just last week, GiveMeSport claimed that Tottenham have the upper hand in the race for the Brentford star since Man Utd and Arsenal appear unlikely to push ahead with a move for the England international.

Ivan Toney would be a good fit for Tottenham

Robinson believes that Toney would be a better signing for Spurs than Isak since Ange Postecoglou’s side need an out-and-out centre-forward rather than another versatile striker.

When asked about Tottenham’s and Arsenal’s rumoured interest in Isak, the former Spurs goalkeeper told Betfred: “He’d be a great signing for both clubs. I believe both clubs need an out-and-out number nine, but I believe that Tottenham should go for Ivan Toney over Alexander Isak

“Don’t go for a player that can play as a wide player as well as a number nine, go for an out-and-out number nine like Ivan Toney and make a statement.

“Isak’s got the choice of both clubs, but I believe Champions League football will play a part in his decision if Newcastle United did have to let him go. It would be great for Tottenham if they got either of Isak or Toney because both would be statement signings for both themselves and Arsenal.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I disagree with Robinson’s assessment as I actually think Isak would be a better fit for Tottenham than Toney, given how Postecoglou sets his team up to play.

Having said that, there is no doubt that the England international would be easier to get than the Newcastle man this summer, given the former’s contract situation.
