CRISTIANO RONALDO made sure to “cheer up the team” after he was dropped for Portugal’s World Cup clash against Switzerland.

The former Manchester United forward started the round of 16 game from the bench, with Goncalo Ramos taking his place from kickoff.

Portugal’s Otavio has revealed that Ronaldo is still the team’s ‘leader’[/caption]

There was a lot of noise about the decision from manager Fernando Santos and questions as to how the 37-year-old would react.

However, the selection paid off as Ramos netted a hat trick on his first-ever World Cup start, helping Portugal to a 6-1 win and a spot in the quarter-finals.

Ronaldo did get on to the pitch as he was subbed on in the 73rd minute, but he failed to get on the scoresheet.

After the final whistle, it was thought that he went straight back to the changing rooms, but it was later revealed that he did go and clap the travelling support.

While it is not known whether or not he will be back in the team for the match against Morocco, he still has the respect of his team-mates.

Midfielder Otavio has revealed that Ronaldo did not kick up a fuss about being benched and instead made sure the rest of the squad was okay.

He told COPEMundial: “Do you know the first thing Ronaldo did when he found out he wouldn’t start?

“He went to talk to Goncalo and the rest of the team to cheer them up.

Portugal will battle for their spot in the World Cup semi-finals on Saturday at the Al Thumama Stadium.

When the tournament is over, Ronaldo will be on the hunt for his next club.

He has been linked with a meg-money move to clubs in Saudi Arabia as well as the MLS.
