Mohsen Rezaee, Afghan Taekwondo athlete, defeats Japanese opponent

Mohsen Rezaee, an Afghan Taekwondo athlete, defeated his Japanese opponent in the qualification rounds at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Mr. Rezaee triumphed over his rival on Saturday, March 16, in China, in the -58 kg weight category, with the match concluding with a score of 12 to 6 in his favour.

The qualification rounds for the 2024 Paris Olympics began yesterday, March 15, in China.

It’s worth noting that Ali Reza Abbas, another Afghan Taekwondo athlete competing under the banner of the Refugee Team of the World Taekwondo Federation, secured his spot in the Olympics by defeating opponents from Nepal, the Philippines, and Hong Kong.

The qualification rounds for the 2024 Paris Olympics in Taekwondo Asia commenced in China on Friday with the participation of 94 Taekwondo athletes.

On Saturday, March 16, the rounds are set to conclude, marking another chapter in the arduous journey of Afghan athletes amidst their country’s crisis.

Despite their athletic achievements, Afghan athletes like Rezaee and Abbas face immense challenges due to the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. Many struggle with basic needs, security concerns, and limited access to resources essential for training and international competition.

The turmoil in their homeland casts a shadow over their sporting endeavours, underscoring the urgent need for support and solidarity from the global sports community.
