Man Utd must beat Chelsea to signing of €40m 'real powerhouse' defender - Our view

0 11

Manchester United had a productive month of July in the transfer window as they secured the signings of Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez.

There should be a few more arrivals over the coming weeks, and a new right-back appears as one of the club’s priorities, provided the club can shift Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

United are yet to receive any suitable offers for the England star, but they may need to act fast with Chelsea working on signing Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan.

The Netherlands international had a fantastic debut season with the Nerazzurri last term, bagging five goals and seven assists from 45 appearances across all competitions.

The club’s need to raise funds could see the Dutchman leave in the coming days, and United could be left behind in the pursuit unless they make a formal approach soon.

United boss Erik ten Hag is reportedly an admirer of the 26-year-old. He could be a perfect upgrade on Diogo Dalot for the right-back spot with his better attacking attributes.

Dumfries could be the perfect right-back for Ten Hag

Over the past year, Dumfries has played from right wing-back for club and country and this has brought the best out of him with regular goal contributions.

Despite this, he should not have any trouble adapting to the right-back role as he was an established player from the position for his former club PSV Eindhoven.

Under Ten Hag, Dumfries would definitely prosper as the Dutch tactician prefers his full-backs making regular overlapping runs to deliver early crosses into the box.

Dumfries has already shown that he has the physicality that would suit the Premier League, and United must get hold of his services ahead of Thomas Tuchel’s side.

He has been previously described as a ‘real powerhouse‘ by Northern Scot.

At Chelsea, Dumfries has direct competition from Reece James for the right wing-back role. The Blues would not want to limit James’ progress by playing him in a back three.

This would mean that Dumfries could be used in rotation. On the other hand, he should have an assured starting spot if he were to make the move to Old Trafford this summer.

Diogo Dalot has had a more than decent pre-season, but the Portuguese as well as Wan-Bissaka failed to contribute a single goal or an assist during the course of last season.

If Champions League football is not a priority, United should have the upper hand over Chelsea in the pursuit of Dumfries, but they must first make a formal offer for him.

Inter are looking for around €40 million to sanction his sale this summer. United may have to spend on Dumfries first before weighing up any future bids for Wan-Bissaka’s exit.
