Manager can’t understand why clubs did not sign reported Spurs target in the summer

02

Genk manager John Van den Brom has admitted that he is at a loss as to why big European clubs did not make a move for rumoured Tottenham target Paul Onuachu in the summer.

Onuachu enjoyed a prolific season last time out as he finished the 2020/21 campaign with 35 goals in 41 appearances for Genk.

The 6-foot 7-inch striker has carried on from where he left off this campaign too, having found the back of the net 10 times in 14 league appearances so far.

The Daily Mail reported back in October that Tottenham were eyeing the Nigerian international as a potential backup to Harry Kane.

The report suggested that the North Londoners were facing competition from the likes of Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Southampton and West Ham for the 27-year-old.

Genk are allegedly open to selling the striker if they receive an offer of around £20m in January.

Van den Brom has now revealed that Onuachu wanted a big move during the summer and backed the centre-forward to succeed in Europe’s top leagues.

The Genk boss told Voetbal Krant. “Paul hoped for a transfer but, in the end, no one came.

“In the final few days before the closing of the window, he realized that he would have to stay.

“Was he disappointed? Let’s say he’s a boy who’s too sweet (to express his frustration).

“I still don’t understand why no club was concrete for him. Put Paul in a top league, surround him with even better players, and he will score his goals there too. I really like him very much.”

Even if Spurs were looking at Onuachu as an option previously, the club’s targets are likely to have changed following Conte’s appointment. Based on the speculation over the last few weeks, it does seem like Vlahovic is the man that the Italian desperately wants.
