Tottenham legend warns Kane price set amid looming threat of ‘ugly’ situation

0 14

Tottenham legend Chris Waddle believes Harry Kane’s transfer value will have been set if Manchester City pay £100million to sign Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish.

Grealish could well become become Britain’s first £100m footballer by making the move to City. Reports from Sky Sports News claim that Villa are likely to accept the bid. What’s more, they have reached a deal to sign Bayer Leverusen winger Leon Bailey. The Jamaican will go some way to replacing the England star.

Meanwhile, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has insisted he will not sell Kane this summer.

However, news that the England striker failed to show up for training on Monday suggests he feels prepared to agitate for a move to City.

Indeed, City have already reportedly lodged a £100million bid for the 28-year-old.

Former Spurs winger Waddle believes that the Grealish deal will prove a marker for Kane’s valuation.

“Daniel Levy is shrewd in the business side and he will dig his heels in,” Waddle told TEAMtalk at a VO5 event.

“When you look at the market, if we are talking £100m for Jack Grealish, you have to put another £50m on that for Harry Kane.

“We don’t want to see it go ugly and Harry Kane downing tools and refusing to play, so hopefully they can sit down and sort it out.

“City might offer players as part exchange, but Spurs won’t pay the wages they would be getting at City, so Tottenham will say we want cash… simple as.

“Harry Kane has three years left on his contract, so Tottenham can say to Manchester City if you are willing to pay £100m for Jack Grealish, we want £150m for Harry Kane. Take it or leave it.”

Waddle went on to suggest he understands Kane must have an “urge” in him to win trophies. Indeed, he recognised Spurs look unlikely to challenge for major silverware in the next few years.

“Harry’s just turned 28 and he looking and thinking the next four to five seasons are the opportunity for me to win something,” the pundit added.

“I understand his frustration. It’s alright setting personal targets and achieving them, but he is England captain and wants to win medals. At some point in your career, you look at it and say I was top scorer and I got the golden boot and then they’ll say what did you win?

“At the moment he can say he got to the final of a Champions League and a League Cup and we never won it. At the minute, so many appearances and goals, but he wants to win something.

“I left Tottenham (in 1989) and went to Marseille and we won the league three years running and got to the Champions League final, French Cup Finals.

“You want to look back in your career and say I’ve been part of a team that’s won something.”
