Prem star snubbing historic deal with Liverpool, two rivals, keen
Southampton striker Danny Ings is refusing to sign the club’s new contract offer as he seeks a move back to a Champions League club, according to a report.
Ings has resurrected his career with the south coast club since moving from Liverpool in 2018.
Scoring 40 goals in 81 appearances for the Saints, he also scored 22 Premier League goals last season. That put him joint-second with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and one behind Jamie Vardy in the rankings.
What’s more, the Englishman has found himself back in the international fold due to his form.
As such, The Telegraph reports that Southampton have offered him a ‘historic’ new four-year deal. Ings would become the club’s most lucrative earner in their history.
In addition, his contract would overtake those recently given to Fraser Forster and captain James Ward-Prowse.
However, the striker is willing to hold off in the belief that a bigger club boasting Champions League football will come in for his services.
Indeed, Ings always believed that he would be able to return to the upper echelons of English football with an injury-free run.
An unfortunate run of spells on the sidelines hampered his chances at Liverpool, despite Jurgen Klopp retaining full faith in the player. As such, now that he has demonstrated his consistency, he is ready for a bigger club again.
The Telegraph adds that Ings’ key consideration is not financial but to play at the highest level again.
Report reveals chances of Ings move
Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has publicly urged Ings to sign the deal on the table. He has called the proposal “fantastic”.
However, he has also admitted that life would move on if Ings, likewise, decided to seek pastures new.
As for the chances of a big move happening, The Telegraph claims that Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City could all become interested in the coming months.
Liverpool have already witnessed his talents at first hand, despite his injury problems. But all three clubs could look to sign a striker in the summer transfer window.
Reports have outlined that, in their hunt to replace Sergio Aguero, City already have three targets on their radar.
United, meanwhile, have looked to bolster their front line for some time. However, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s main concern has been a new winger.
In any case, the newspaper notes that Ings would prove an ‘attractive prospect’ to any club seeking a proven striker.
