We’re Hiring: Youth Education Coordinator

The Washington Area Bicyclist Association is looking for a Youth Education Coordinator to join our bicycle education program. We are looking for someone with knowledge of bike maintenance skills and an interest in working with young people. This role will support WABA’s in-school bike programs, summer bike camp, and Earn a Bike programs. 

TEAM

WABA’s Education program facilitates over 150 classes, rides, and outreach events per year, with the goal of bringing high quality, accessible, and effective bicycle education to adults, youth and families across the region. This position will report to WABA’s Youth Education Manager. 

POSITION LOCATION

The candidate must be located in or willing to relocate to the Washington D.C. region. This position will work primarily out of WABA’s office in Washington D.C. Currently, all WABA staff work two days in the office unless otherwise stated. This position will be responsible for conducting routine in person work including, leading in school bicycle education programs, summer bike camps, and earn a bike programs. 

COMPENSATION

This position is part of the Transport Workers Union Local 320 and classified as a level one role.

Compensation & Benefits

This is a full-time, salaried, overtime non-exempt position with a starting salary of $54,000-58,000. Additional benefits include:

  • A 32-hour work week with flexible scheduling

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES 

Implement WABA’s Bicycle Safety Program in DC Public Charter Schools (50%) 

WABA is contracted by the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) to provide in-school bicycle safety education exclusively to Public Charter Schools across the District. The Youth Education Coordinator will be responsible for teaching 9 in-school programs per year with support from the Youth Education Manager. Their responsibilities include overseeing assigned instructors, teaching program curriculum, transporting program equipment, and contributing to program evaluation and reporting.

Lead WABA’s Earn a Bike Programs (25%)

Develop and adapt a curriculum for a ~14-session bicycle maintenance class. Handle an instructional group composed of 4-8 high school-aged youth. Coordinate class scheduling and physical needs with the Gearin’ Up Shop Manager

Lead WABA’s Bike Camp! (10%) 

Lead day-to-day activities for WABA’s Bike Camp, a summer program for kids aged 8 to 14. The Youth Education Coordinator will oversee camp operations, including daily activities, leading the camp instructor team, facilitating pre-camp rider assessments, and ensuring camper safety and well-being. 

Conduct Youth Focused Outreach (10%)  

Schedule, plan, and implement 1-2 youth-focused outreach events per month across the District. Events should be geared towards elementary, middle, high school, and college-aged youth, and can include tabling events, workshops, seminars, group rides, or other customized activities. 

Maintain WABA’s Youth Bike Fleet (5%) 

Oversee the storage, and regular maintenance of WABA’s youth bicycle fleet. 

QUALIFICATIONS

Qualifications: 

  • Experience working/teaching youth (coaching, teaching, outdoor education, or other experiential education position)
  • Working knowledge of bicycle maintenance, including flat repair, shifting and brake adjustments, and regular maintenance tasks needed for a bike fleet (complicated maintenance will be performed by a local bicycle shop). 
  • The ability to pass DC Public Schools’ volunteering requirements, including a tuberculosis test and criminal background check.
  • The ability to ride a bike in mixed city traffic and off-street trails.
  • A valid driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one, a clean driving record. This position will undergo mandatory van training. 
  • The ability to lift up to 50 pounds for van loading and load out. 
  • Current certifications, or the willingness and ability to obtain the certifications within the first two months of employment, for:
    • League Cycling Instructor (LCI) certification;
    • First Aid/CPR for adults and children.
    • WABA will pay for required certification expenses. 
  • The ability to organize time wisely and balance many projects 
  • A flexible schedule and willingness to work occasional hours outside of traditional business hours (i.e. mornings before 9 AM, evenings after 5 PM, and weekends) in line with scheduled programming 
  • Enthusiastic, sincere interpersonal and communication skills, both informal and written, including active listening and learning. 
  • A proven track record for being dependable, timely, communicative, and the ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • A commitment to respect, include, and be kind to all.
  • Creative problem-solving skills and capacity to innovate.
  • An understanding of how race, gender, and other factors shape conversations and experiences. 

Useful experience and skills:

  • Outreach program development and event planning experience.
  • Experience with event logistics and risk management.
  • Working fluency in Spanish, ASL, and/or Amharic.
  • Experience with Google Suite (Gmail, Chat, Drive, Sheets, Docs) and Salesforce.
