OC Women’s Spotlight – Ann Budge

0 3

How long have you been in cycling?

Ann began her cycling journey when she was 50 years old. She rode and competed for nearly 3 decades at local events in Ontario and national events across Canada and the United States. Unfortunately, Ann was injured in a crash while she was riding 10 years ago that ended her cycling career. However, her and her husband Don still try to attend and volunteer at mountain bike events in their area.

While Ann herself isn’t riding her bike anymore she is still advocating for the sport and even partnered with the Simcoe County Museum in the summer of 2022 to create an exhibit called “Making Tracks” to showcase the history of mountain biking and other cyclists from the area that have raced nationally and internationally.

How did you get into cycling?

Ann has been an athlete her whole life. She enjoyed running and cross-country skiing. When Ann was 50, she learned that her daughter and son in law had begun mountain biking. At the time mountain biking was new to the scene and was just becoming popular. Ann suggested to her husband that they should get mountain bikes so they could join their daughter and son in law on rides. Ann was
immediately hooked and competed in her first race in 1987.

What is your favorite discipline?

Ann’s favourite discipline is mountain bike. One of her biggest achievements in her cycling career was making the National Mountain Bike Team in 1992. Ann shared that she wanted it so badly, she worked really hard and trained like crazy to reach her goal. She succeeded and raced in the World Championships in Bromont, Quebec that year as a member of the team.

Ann spent a lot of her time mountain biking and competing at Hardwood Ski & Bike in Oro-Medonte. She even competed at the very first Hardwood Wednesday MTB Race 30 years ago.
