[Baseball] Homers end Bees' run at NAIA National Championships
St. Ambrose saw its 2017 season come to an end with a pair of losses at the NAIA National Championship Opening Round in Bartlesville, Okla.
The Bees fell to Midland 10-4 Monday before ending the year with a 12-2 loss to Bryan (Tenn.) Tuesday.
After taking early leads in both games, SAU was undone by home runs, giving up three in the opener and five more in the second game.
Kevin Zanger gave St. Ambrose a 1-0 lead in the first. He singled and advanced to third on Mike Miller's base hit. Miller stole second and Zanger came in to score on a throwing error from the Midland catcher.
Midland tied the game in the second and took a 2-1 lead in the third. The Bees stayed within a run into the sixth, when the Warriors scored six times, capped by back-to-back home runs, to open up an 8-1 lead.
Matt Baldwin hit a two-run homer in the seventh to get SAU to within 8-3, but Midland answered with a two-run shot of its own in the eighth to restore a 10-3 advantage.
David Gonzalez drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth to end the scoring.
Jake Sheley was tagged with the loss.
