CHICAGO – It was another big week for key members of the Saint Xavier University men's track & field team last week. At the Lewis University Twilight Invite last Tuesday, junior Anthony Kowalczyk (Chicago, Ill./Steinmetz) and freshman Gabriel Esparza (Blue Island, Ill./Eisenhower) both had record-breaking performances. Kowalczyk set new school records again in the hammer and discus throws with marks of 39.00 meters and 41.96 meters, respectively. Esparza broke the school record in the 3,000 meter run (3K) that same night with a time of 9:14.20. Senior Abel Hernandez (Alsip, Ill./Shepard) ended the big week with an exclamation point automatically qualifying for the 2017 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in the 10,000 meter run at the Hillsdale College Gina Relays in Hillsdale, Mich., with a school record time of 30:31.81. His time is listed as the sixth-best nationally in the NAIA this season. SXU also had personal-best performances at Lewis by Kowalczyk of 13.54 meters in the shot put and junior Josh Wallick (Fisher, Ill./Fisher) with a personal-best throw of 38.46 meters in the discus.
