The Orioles Were Dominated Once Again
On a sad Monday in New York due to the passing of 87 year old and long time broadcaster John Sterling, the New York Yankees (24-11) trounced the Baltimore Orioles by a score of 12-1. The win completed a four-game sweep of the Birds and extended their current losing streak to five games.
Living up to their nickname of “Bronx Bombers”, the Yankees out-scored Baltimore 34-10, out-hit them 47-26 and hit 9 homeruns in the series. Further illustrating the Orioles’ ineptitude was the fact that the team was 4 for 27 with runners in scoring position compared to the Yankees’ 17 for 38 in the same situation.
The Yankees opened the scoring with an Aaron Judge homerun following a Trent Grisham double in the first inning. A third run was added in the third. A two-out wild pitch by starting pitcher Shane Baz (1-3) allowed a run to score and extend the sixth inning. The original call of out was overturned upon challenge. A fifth run scored on a RBI-single, leading to Baz’s exit with runners on first and second and two outs. Yennier Cano gave up New York’s sixth run, adding to Baz’s final line.
Baz finished his night with 6 runs, 5 earned, allowed on 5 hits with 5 walks and 4 strikeouts over 5.2 innings.
In what seems to be an instance of throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks, newly signed RHP Lou Trivino allowed 6 runs on 4 hits and walked 3 in the eighth. Trivino only lasted two-thirds of the inning, necessitating Manager Craig Albernaz to use position player Weston Wilson to close out the inning.
Baltimore’s lone run came in the top of the sixth on Colton Cowser‘s bases loaded walk.
Blaze Alexander led the “offense” with a 3 for 4 night. Leody Taveras (1 for 3, BB) had the only Baltimore extra-base hit, a seventh inning double.
Adley Rutschman (1 for 5) recorded his 500th career hit in the first inning.
The Orioles had runners on first and second with no outs in both the third and fifth innings but grounded into a double play each time, weakening the threat.
