CARL ALBERT STATE COLLEGE WRESTLING TEAMS COMPETE AT NJCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

POTEAU, OK- Carl Albert State College’s men’s and women’s wrestling teams represented the Vikings with determination and strong performances at the NJCAA National Championships this past weekend.

The wrestling teams traveled to Council Bluffs, Iowa, with ten national qualifiers competing against some of the top talent in the country. The Vikings finished 20th overall out of 55 teams, highlighting the program’s continued progress on the national stage.

Representing Carl Albert at nationals were:
Dakota Fenwick (125), Sean Michael Gonzalez (133), Camden Webb (141), Kaiden Cue (149), Monty Hall (157), Grayson Carpenter (165), Jory Garrett (174), Braxton Robertson (184), Corey Chilcoat (197), and Brandon Schoenecke (285).

Leading the way for the Vikings, Sean Michael Gonzalez earned All-American honors for the second time in his career.  Two additional Viking wrestlers had strong performances, with Grayson Carpenter and Brandon Schoenecke both advancing to the blood round, the final match that determines All-American status. Each finished just one match away from earning the prestigious honor.

The future looks bright for the Viking men, with eight freshman starters expected to return next season, providing strong momentum for continued success.

The team also demonstrated excellence in the classroom, earning eight Scholar All-American honors this year, an increase from three last season. Names will be released once finalized by the national office.

The Carl Albert State College women’s wrestling team also delivered an impressive performance at the national championships, finishing 11th overall, just two points shy of a top-10 finish.

The Vikings were led by Laila Mirza, who finished as National Runner-Up, and Madison Roe, who placed 6th overall. Both athletes earned All-American honors for their performances.

The team also saw strong results across the lineup, with six Viking wrestlers advancing to the blood round, the final match that determines All-American status. Notably, four of those six competitors were freshmen, signaling a promising future for the growing program.

With strong national performances and a young roster continuing to develop, the Viking women’s team looks ahead to year two with excitement and determination, preparing for a strong offseason and another competitive season ahead.
