Peterson and Scott Combine For Fantastic Spring Debut

0 1

The Mets took home another Spring Training win on Wednesday evening, this time taking down Team Israel in a tuneup for the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

The starter for the orange and blue was 2025 staff leader David Peterson. After a shaky finish to last season, Peterson came out firing in his first spring outing. The left-hander tossed three innings of shutout baseball, allowing just one hit while walking two and striking out four.

His only early hiccup came against the first batter of the game, as Israel’s Cole Carrigg worked a leadoff walk. Peterson responded the way you’d expect from a veteran arm, retiring the next three hitters in order to erase any threat. The second inning followed a similar script: a one-out walk, then quick, efficient damage control.

“I think we were just trying to work everything,” Peterson said after the outing. “Work on some situations that we would in the game, some sequencing stuff.”

The lone hit against him came in the third on a ground ball through the right side. Even then, Peterson never wavered. He induced a comebacker that turned into a smooth double play, slamming the door on the inning and his afternoon.

It’s an encouraging start to the spring for Peterson, who is looking to remind everyone he’s still capable of ace-caliber production. With newcomer Freddy Peralta now headlining the rotation, Peterson no longer carries the weight of being the staff leader. Instead, he can settle into a role that allows him to focus purely on execution. If early returns mean anything in March, that focus looks sharp. Plus, Peterson wasn’t the only arm drawing attention.

Christian Scott, who showed flashes of greatness during his 2024 stint with the Mets before undergoing Tommy John surgery, made his return to the mound. Scott spun 2 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out five without issuing a walk.

For a Mets team blending veteran stability with emerging talent, Wednesday afternoon offered a glimpse of what that balance could look like. Obviously, it’s only the beginning of Spring Training. The results don’t count. The innings are short, and the lineups are experimental. However, the tone can be set now, and for the Mets, the tone sounds a lot like strong pitching depth.
