Could Lambert Be Next Mets Bullpen Ace?
When right handed pitcher Ryan Lambert was drafted out of the University of Oklahoma, he was already touching 100 mph on his fastball. Since being selected in the by the Mets in the eighth round in 2024, Lambert has thrown his fastball as hard as 100.9 MPH with over 20 inches of inverted break and over 2,500 RPM of spin. He pairs that pitch with a mid-80s mph slider that comes in with good sweep, but he is still working on improving his control. On an episode of Mets’d Up, guest Lance Brozdowski repeatedly named Trevor Megill as a “dead ringer comp” for Lambert.

So how did Lambert develop into this power reliever being compared to one of the best closers in the game? According to him, it came from eating raw eggs. Lots and lots of raw eggs.
Per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, while trying to build muscle in college after being cut from the Missouri State baseball team, Lambert ate 30 raw eggs a day for a full month. In an interview with James Schiano and Marc Luino from Mets’d Up in 2024, he linked that diet directly to his jump in velocity saying “30 eggs a day for a month straight. Do that and you’re throwing 100.” His process involved cracking ten eggs into a cup for breakfast, ten more after his workout, and then the final ten before bed. He would purchase packs of 60 eggs at the time from Walmart for $5 each.
That is not his only interesting food choice – per DiComo, in 2025, he went to a Brazilian steakhouse with teammate Jonah Tong and ordered a bowl of chicken hearts. He does not still eat 30 eggs a day, but he does enjoy grilling steak and cooking sweet potatoes on most days. He takes nutrition very seriously, and outfielder Nick Morabito said Lambert once chastised him for adding an extra creamer into his coffee.
Lambert believes his diet is what has helped him gain muscle and increase his velocity and his goal in 2025, in addition to making the big league club, is to surpass 101 MPH on his fastball. In his first spring training appearance this year, he averaged 98 MPH and topped out at 99 MPH.
