Statistical Spotlight: Bo Bichette’s Strikeout Rate
The New York Mets made a big splash by signing Bo Bichette to a three-year, $126 million dollar deal. The primary goal is to play Bichette at third base, despite having no experience at that position. While there is uncertainty in terms of this move defensively, Bo Bichette’s offensive output is something to get very excited about.
Bichette slashed .311/.357/.483 with an OPS of .840 in 2025. He hit 18 home runs while driving in 94 RBIs. He also amassed 181 hits, 44 being doubles, and scored 78 runs. Those standard statistics are impressive, however, taking a look at some of his advanced metrics is even more impressive.
The most intriguing statistic for Bichetter’s 2025 campaign was his strikeout rate. Bichette posted a very low 14.5 strikeout rate over the course of 139 games and 628 plate appearances. That number was the lowest of Bichette’s career and ranked in the league’s 86th percentile. Compared to the Mets’ team average of 21.4% for the 2025 season, Bichette was far below the team average. Although his projected 2026 strikeout rate is slightly higher according to Fangraphs, at 16.3%, that is still a great ratio which can provide the Mets with some consistent contact throughout the season.
Another reason to look forward to Bichette’s at bats is his contact with runners in scoring position. The Mets struggled with this for the majority of 2025, highlighted in this previous article. Bichette can provide a new outlook in the middle of this lineup with RISP. Bichette batted .381 in 164 plate appearances with RISP for 2025.
Combine his situational hitting with his low strikeout rate, Bichette can be a complete offensive package to add to the heart of the Mets’ lineup. While his positional fielding might be a question mark, his bat is anything but that. Look for Bo Bichette to nicely add value quickly to this lineup.
