As we continue to share our reactions to the Mets’ offseason happenings with you, we have another hello to react to – welcome to New York, Freddy Peralta! Here’s how we feel about the move.
Also, in case you want to take a look back at the good and the bad of this offseason, here are some more reactions:
- Hello, Bo Bichette!
- Goodbye Jeff McNeil
- Goodbye Edwin Díaz
- Hello Jorge Polanco
- Goodbye Pete Alonso
- Goodbye, Brandon Nimmo, and hello, Marcus Semien

To bring a baseball analogy into trade evaluation, this move is a grand slam. The Mets have officially acquired their Game 1 starter, a position that’s arguably been open since Jacob deGrom left the team. Freddy Peralta has a proven record of both regular season and postseason success; He’s a perfect fit for a team that desperately needed effective starting pitching. Tobias Myers is more than just a throw-in. He has some interesting characteristics that I think will translate well for the Mets’ pitching development system. This is an A+ move that should put them over the hump in the postseason.

I thought adding an ace was the most important thing the Mets needed to do this winter. Peralta is in his prime and coming off his best season. Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat may turn out to be excellent, but it would have been hard to find them playing time in 2026. The Mets have made it clear they are a win-now team. Grade: A+

This is the move Mets fans have been waiting for all offseason. Tarik Skubal seemed out of the question, but Peralta was the second-best rumored to be available. This now alleviates Nolan McLean of some pressure and gives the Mets a true ace, something they lacked in 2025. They also get a solid swingman in Tobias Myers, and while Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat were both highly-regarded prospects, the Mets have the depth in their farm system to trade them. This deal gets a solid A from me; the only way it goes up to an A+ is if they extend Peralta.

David Stearns is cookin’ with gas! A top-of-the-rotation starter was high on the Mets’ priority list, and they can check that off with Freddy Peralta. Tobias Myers, having success as both a starter and a reliever, bolsters the bullpen nicely, as well as adding depth to the starting rotation. The Mets’ farm system seems to have reached the point where prospect-hugging is unnecessary, so while it was fun to imagine watching Brandon Sproat dominate on the mound and Jett Williams zip around the diamond, we likely wouldn’t have seen either of them get much big league playing time until 2027. If there is a 2027 season. This trade gets an A for “Ace”. Tack on a + if they can extend Peralta before Opening Day.
Michael Mayer
This is one of the reasons why you build up a farm system, so you can trade for an immediate need and that’s what they did. Williams and Sproat are a steep cost, but the Mets got the frontline starter they needed and also got a good, controllable (five years) arm who is versatile. The Mets also dealt from areas of strength; they’re developing a ton of young pitchers, and A.J. Ewing can potentially fill the roles Williams might have. Even if the Mets don’t end up extending/re-signing Peralta, this looks like a good deal for the Mets. The Mets roster now looks mostly complete, and it could be one of the better ones in the National League.

David Stearns has been criticized all offseason. Letting a handful of fan favorites leave put plenty of pressure on him. But to his credit, he has executed his plan to perfection. To cap off what has been an incredible week, he filled the Mets’ biggest need. An ace, a frontline starter. Freddy Peralta is exactly what the rotation was missing. He and Nolan McLean give the Mets one of the more exciting 1-2 punches in the National League. The excitement and buzz around this team has us all ready for the 2026 season!
