Friday Rumor Roundup: Blue Jays Meet With Edwin Díaz’s Agents

0 15

The Mets are facing some early competition in their quest to re-sign closer Edwin Díaz.

According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, the Toronto Blue Jays met with Díaz’s representation during the general managers’ meetings in Las Vegas before they came to an end on Thursday.

“The Blue Jays, according to people briefed on their activity, met with Díaz’s agents from Wasserman at the general managers’ meetings,” Rosenthal wrote. “That’s not necessarily a major development. This early in the offseason, teams express interest in pretty much every quality player.”

Díaz, who opted out of his five-year contract with the Mets, is expected to generate a strong market as perhaps the top free agent reliever this offseason. The 31-year-old turned in one of the best seasons of his career in 2025 with a 1.63 ERA, 2.28 FIP and 98 strikeouts across 62 appearances and 66 1/3 innings to go alongside 28 saves, which earned him the Trevor Hoffman National League Reliever of the Year Award.

Rosenthal noted that the Blue Jays are targeting high-leverage relief pitching and are expected to be aggressive after losing in Game 7 of the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers despite holding a lead entering the ninth inning. At the same time, though, he stated that rotation help is more of a priority for Toronto at the moment.

Díaz is reportedly seeking a deal that’s nearly identical, or least in the same ballpark, as the five-year, $102 million agreement he reached with New York following the 2022 campaign, per Rosenthal and Will Sammon.

While meeting with reporters in Vegas, Díaz stated that contract talks with the Mets have already begun and that the odds of him returning to the club are right around 50-50.
