After the Jays pummeled the Dodgers’ bullpen in Game 1, Yoshinobu Yamamoto made sure that couldn’t happen again as he tossed his second consecutive complete game to even up the series in a 5-1 Dodgers victory. Will Smith and Max Muncy went deep against Kevin Gausman in the seventh inning to put the Dodgers in front.

The Blue Jays will send 41-year-old Max Scherzer to the mound, while the Dodgers will counter with Tyler Glasnow. Scherzer was solid in Game 4 of the ALCS against the Mariners, allowing two runs on three hits, walking four and striking out five over 5 2/3 innings. Scherzer will become the second player to appear in a World Series for four different teams, joining Lonnie Smith. Glasnow, meanwhile, delivered another strong outing against the Brewers, holding them to one run on three hits, walking three and striking out eight over 5 2/3 innings. In 13 1/3 innings this postseason (two starts, one relief appearance), Glasnow has allowed just one earned run and struck out 18 batters.

• Hideo Nomo is throwing out the ceremonial first pitch tonight. The Japanese-born righty won National League Rookie of the Year and started the All-Star Game in 1995. He is credited with being a trailblazer for Japanese major leaguers.
• When Max Scherzer faces Shohei Ohtani, it will mark just the second time that a three-time Cy Young Award winner has faced a three-time MVP in the World Series. The only other occurrence came in 2009, when Pedro Martínez battled Álex Rodríguez.
• The Dodgers’ starting rotation has compiled a 1.84 ERA this postseason, the fourth-best mark in history for a team with a minimum of ten games played. Only the 1981 Expos (1.59), 1996 Braves (1.59) and 2018 Brewers (1.64) have been better.
• MLB announced today that Mookie Betts is this year’s Roberto Clemente Award winner. Betts and his wife, Brianna, founded the 5050 Foundation in 2021, an organization dedicated to helping their communities develop resources for success.
