Suero Homers in Arizona Fall League

Mets prospect Chris Suero went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs on Wednesday in the Scottsdale Scorpions’ 12-9 loss to the Salt River Rafters in Arizona Fall League play. Three Met minor-league pitchers also appeared in the game, including Bryce Jenkins, who served up a go-ahead grand slam in the ninth inning. (Box score)

Suero, ranked 14th in MMO’s August top 50 prospect update, was playing in his third AFL game. He’s 3-for-12 overall. The 21-year-old Bronx native hit .233/.379/.407 with 16 homers and 68 RBIs in 115 games combined this year between High-A Brooklyn (74 games) and Double-A Binghamton (41 games). He stole 35 bases in 43 attempts. Suero started 73 games at catcher, 20 in left field, and 16 at first base.

Right-hander Austin Troesser, 23, gave up two runs on two hits over 1 1/3 innings in his second AFL appearance. The 2023 fourth-round pick from the University of Missouri went 2-1 with a 4.80 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 15 innings pitched for Brooklyn this year.

Right-hander Brett Banks pitched a perfect eighth inning with a strikeout to hold a 9-8 Scorpion lead. Banks went 2-1 with a 2.49 ERA in 25 1/3 innings at Brooklyn this year. The 24-year-old right-hander was an 11th-round pick from UNC-Wilmington in 2023.

Jenkins, 24, blew the save in the top of the ninth, giving up a leadoff double, two walks, and the slam that put the Rafters up 12-9. The right-hander was a 17th-round pick out of the University of Tennessee in 2023. He gave up six earned runs in 9 1/3 innings at Low-A St. Lucie this season.

AFL teams are comprised of prospects from multiple organizations, with all the Mets assigned to the Scorpions. Outfielder Nick Morabito, who is off to a nice start in the AFL, and outfielder D’Andre Smith, didn’t see action Wednesday.

The Scorpions (3-3) will play the Glendale Desert Dogs (2-3) on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
