Alonso One of Many Mets Hitting Free Agency
Pete Alonso headlines the list of Mets set to hit free agency this offseason, but a host of others who finished the year in New York could be on the move, too.
The foursome picked up before the trade deadline, Cedric Mullins, Tyler Rogers, Gregory Soto and Ryan Helsley, are all free agents. So are Starling Marte, Jesse Winker, Ryne Stanek and Griffin Canning.
Mullins, who turned 31 Wednesday, hit .182/.284/.281 with two home runs and 10 RBIs in 143 plate appearances after arriving from Baltimore. Rogers was 0-3 with a 2.30 ERA in 27 innings pitched, Soto went 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 24 innings of work and Helsley was 0-3 with a 7.20 ERA in 20 innings pitched.
Marte, who will be 37 next week, has demonstrated that he can still make a valuable contribution to a team in a limited role. The 14-year veteran hit .270/.335/.410 with nine homers and seven steals in 329 plate appearances. He was a designated hitter in 77 of his 98 games played. Marte slashed .272/.329/.405 with 37 homers overall in his four years in New York.
Winker, 32, suffered oblique and back injuries this year and hit one home run in 70 at-bats. Stanek, 34, went 4-6 with a 5.30 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in 56 innings pitched. Canning, 29, was 7-3 with a 3.77 ERA when he ruptured his Achilles tendon coming off the mound against the Braves on June 26.
Alonso, who will be 31 in December, opted out of the $24 million he would have been paid in 2026, choosing to test free agency for the second year in a row. He hit .272/.347/.524 with 38 home runs and 126 RBIs. He was second in the MLB in RBIs and tied for the National League lead in doubles with 41.
Coming off a better year offensively, he may find more interest in free agency than last offseason. He also may find more suitors because last year the Mets made him a qualifying offer, which meant if a team signed him, they would give up draft pick compensation. Players can only receive a qualifying offer once in their careers.

Edwin Díaz isn’t a free agent, but he can become one if he opts out of the last two years and $37 million of his contract. He said Sunday he was undecided and wanted to talk to his family.
Frankie Montas and A.J. Minter, who both suffered season-ending injuries, have player options. Montas may miss all of 2026 due to right elbow surgery. Minter is expected to be back for spring training after left lat surgery in May. Both are expected to opt in, Montas for $17 million and Minter for $11 million.
Jose Siri, Richard Lovelady and Kevin Herget all chose to be free agents after the Mets sent them down to the minors after the season.
The Mets have club options on relievers Brooks Raley ($4.75M) and Drew Smith ($2M). Raley, 37, was 3-1 with a 2.45 ERA in 25 2/3 innings pitched. Smith, 32, had Tommy John surgery in July 2024 and is scheduled to return next season.
Players become free agents the day after the conclusion of the World Series, though they can’t sign with a new team until five days after. Options must also be decided on during that five-day period.
