Roundtable: Do You Think The Mets Still Make The Playoffs, & How Far Can They Go?
Things have not been the greatest as of recently. But… ya gotta believe, right? Can the Mets still make the playoffs, and if so, how far can they get? Here’s what we here at MMO think… and you may (or may not) be surprised to hear that we believe.

What a difficult question. Despite three teams putting immense pressure on them, I think the Mets sneak into the postseason. It will be chaotic, it will be stressful, but I think they get it done in the end. As for how far they can go if they get into October, I am as optimistic as they come. The Mets still could make a run to the NLCS, maybe even the World Series. A lot would have to improve, in every area, but the ceiling still remains high. The rotation and bullpen in particular would need to showcase the levels of April and May for a deep run to come to fruition.

As crazy as this sounds, I think they have just enough left in the tank this season to hold on and make it! Granted, it’s not the way we’ve wanted it to go but I think they can. When they do make it, I think they can make it to the NLCS again. This pitching staff, albeit shaky in some parts, can be great when shortened. Not having to rely on the back end too much and getting short appearances from certain players can do them well in a short series all while boosting the pen. The offense, well, not worried about that. We could be in for a long October is all rolls out well!

It’s been a very wild season, but I do think the Mets make the playoffs. I think the lineup and the young arms do enough to win games down the stretch, despite the bullpen’s best efforts to blow games. Once making the playoffs, anything can happen. If they get hot, they could go very far. If they struggle, it could be a quick run. I’ll split the difference, as I think the Mets get past the wild card round but get bounced in the divisional round.

Yes, the Mets can make the playoffs. I think they can win a best-of-3 series, but realistically, they don’t have enough pitching depth to even win a five-game series. The offensive talent on the roster is undeniable, but unless the veteran starters can start giving the team some length, it will be hard to piece together wins. They also need their deadline acquisitions in the bullpen to step up. Edwin Díaz can’t pitch every inning. The goal now should just be to make it in and see what happens.

While the Mets have consistently had a high probability to make the playoffs this last week on the Fangraphs of the world, I’ve had them teetering around 50 percent. As of this moment, I’m a tentative yes on the playoffs, with as much faith in their competition not stepping up as the Mets necessarily putting anyone away. That being said, the final wild card team is staring at a best of 3 in Los Angeles against the Dodgers, and anyone who says the Dodgers won’t be prohibitive favorites against whomever they play is lying to themselves.

I think the Mets make the playoffs solely based on their schedule and position. The Giants, Reds, and Diamondbacks all have tough schedules — including the Giants and D-backs playing each other in their final 13 games. I don’t necessarily think the Mets will play great down the stretch, but I don’t think they’ll need to.

I think they make it. Once in, I (gotta) believe they have as good a chance as any team in the field. Lindor, Soto and Alonso are all capable of getting hot. Mark Vientos could turn into Mr. October again. I like McLean and Sproat facing lineups that haven’t seen them before (or have seen very little of them in some cases.) The bullpen is volatile. That is a universal issue. Just please, no Ryan Helsley.

This Mets team has been wildly inconsistent so making any solid predictions feels like throwing darts while blindfolded. They have the talent, but all year long they’ve seemed to be lacking the focus and fight necessary for a deep playoff run. Could they sleepwalk through another 8-game losing streak and miss the playoffs? Yes. Could they get white hot and win the World Series? Also yes.
Most likely, they’ll continue to be an inconsistent, frustrating mess and their postseason chances will come down to the final day or two since the teams chasing them have been equally messy. They’ll get into the playoffs by the skin of their teeth, somehow win the Wild Card series, and then get bounced in the Division Series.
