First-Year Foundations Students Explore Campus Resources
The transition from high-school to college can feel like stepping into a whole new world, but Alice Lloyd College’s First-Year Foundations program has been developed to make the transition easier. All first-time students are paired with mentors from across campus for a 16-week course that aids them in adjusting to campus life. The program explores topics ranging from how to choose your major and register for classes to how to deal with roommate conflict.
Recently, Foundations mentors led first-year students on a campus tour with a special focus: finding the places and people who can help them succeed. Students visited key spots like the McGaw Library and tutoring services, Financial Aid, Student Services, and the Blessing Corner sponsored by Campus Ministry. Along the way, mentors shared tips on how each resource could make college life smoother.
The walk wasn’t just about directions, it was about building community. At ALC, over 40 percent of the currently enrolled student body are first-generation college students. These students often face challenges different from their peers, and may not have support from a parent or guardian to navigate different aspects of college life. Foundations mentors used the campus tour to encourage students to lean on the resources around them, reminding them that every faculty member, staff person, and administrator is here to help them succeed.
“First Year Foundations is about building the support that students need to be successful in college, and more specifically at ALC. We are lucky to have mentors from all over campus paired up with these students to help build relationships with them in their first semester on campus,” said Mrs. Kim Cornett, Dean of Women. “Today was about reinforcing where students can find helpful resources on campus. Since students have been here a few weeks at this point, we thought it was an important time to answer some new questions that might have come up about where certain offices are located or where to pick up a care package sent from home.”
At Alice Lloyd College, support starts on day one. The Foundations program helps first-year students discover the tools they need, and the people cheering them on, during their walk down Purpose Road.
