Mets Get Swept By Phillies, Losing Streak Hits Six

0 37

The Mets opened up Thursday’s game against the Phillies on a mission to save face in what has been a rough series, scoring four runs in the first inning. They ended the night with the embarrassment of a four-game sweep at the hands of Philadelphia.

After their opening hit barrage, the Mets’ bats literally went quiet, with their last 25 hitters retired in order by Phillies pitchers. Mets pitchers couldn’t hold on to the lead, and the end result was a 6-4 loss that dropped the Mets 11 games back of Philadelphia for the division and with just a 1.5-game cushion for the final Wild Card spot.

Five of the first six Mets batters had hits off Phillies starter Jesús Luzardo to start the game, including RBI knocks by Mark Vientos, Brandon Nimmo, and Starling Marte. The Mets didn’t have a base-runner the rest of the night.

David Peterson allowed three runs on seven hits in his five innings of work, leaving the game with a one-run lead. Reed Garrett quickly gave up back-to-back doubles in the sixth to tie the game, and Harrison Bader added to his monstrous series with a go-ahead single. Brooks Raley allowed an RBI single to Bryce Harper to pad the Phillies’ lead.

“I’m responsible. I’m the manager. It’s my job to get these guys going, and I will,” Carlos Mendoza said after the game.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Peterson improved on his last couple of starts, striking out eight with just one walk while keeping the Mets in the lead before the bullpen entered. He threw 61 of his 86 pitches for strikes.

UP NEXT

Jacob deGrom returns to Citi Field on Friday for the first time since joining the Texas Rangers. Rookie Jonah Tong takes the mound for the Mets. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM on SNY.
