Mets Comeback Falls Short in 11-8 Loss to the Marlins

0 50

The New York Mets continue to play down to their competition.

In Saturday’s 11-8 loss to the Miami Marlins, their second loss to them in this four-game series, David Peterson went only two innings and struggled mightily. Tyler Rogers and Edwin Díaz also struggled. The offense was good, highlighted by Juan Soto hitting two home runs, but they ran out of gas in the later innings of the game. New York is now 0-55 when trailing after eight innings.

David Peterson Has His Worst Outing Of The Season

As Ron Darling said on SNY before the game, David Peterson starts have usually been a win day for the Mets, especially at home. However, on this day, Peterson did not have it. Peterson was hit up by Miami’s offense, and he couldn’t command his pitches. The Marlins scored five runs in the first inning on five hits. In the second inning, Peterson had three hits and two walks as Miami scored, widening their lead to 8-2. He left the game in the third inning after allowing eight hits, eight runs, and three walks. Peterson now has a 4.96 ERA in his last 13 starts.

Tyler Rogers And Edwin Diaz Struggle

Peterson wasn’t the only pitcher on the team who struggled. Two key Mets relievers also allowed big runs late in the game. Rogers allowed a run in the top of the seventh inning after the Mets tied the game 8-8. He allowed a single to Agustín Ramírez and then a single to Eric Wagaman. Connor Norby drove in Ramírez on a sacrifice fly to give the Marlins the lead right back after New York tied it.

For Díaz, it was a rough ninth inning with Miami up 9-8. He allowed a double to Ramírez, walked Liam Hicks, and then Norby doubled in two runs to give Miami an 11-8 lead. In total, Mets pitching has allowed 27 runs to the Marlins’ offense in this series.

Mets Offense Has Strong Performance, But Struggles Late

Any other day, an eight-run and 12-hit performance highlighted by your superstar player hitting two home runs should be good enough to win a game. However, the Mets’ offense didn’t get much help from Peterson to secure a win.

Francisco Lindor led off the game with a solo home run to make it 5-1 Miami. New York then scratched out another run in the second before a Mark Vientos three-run home run made it 8-5 Miami. Soto hit his first of two home runs to make it 8-6, and then he tied it with a two-run homer in the sixth.

After Miami retook the lead, Jeff McNeil led off the seventh with a triple but was left on third base after Brett Baty grounded out, Starling Marte struck out on three pitches, and Cedric Mullins lined out. New York had Soto on second base with two outs in the eighth, but Nimmo grounded out.

Chris Devenski Pitches Three Shutout Innings

After just being called up, Chris Devenski came in relief of Peterson and was able to help the Mets stay in the game with three shutout innings and three strikeouts.

Player of the Game: Juan Soto

Soto has had a hot August, and that continued on Saturday. He hit his 34th and 35th home runs of the season. He also notched his 25th stolen base of the season.

On Deck

On Sunday afternoon, Kodai Senga will look to secure a series tie against the Marlins’ Sandy Alcantara. The game will be telecast locally on WPIX at 1:40 p.m. EDT and broadcast locally on Audacy Mets Radio, WHSQ 880 AM.
