Morning Briefing: The First-Place Phillies Come to Town
Good morning, Mets fans!
I hope you all had a great weekend and enjoyed watching the Mets play some productive baseball in enemy territory, aka Truist Park.
The Mets beat the Braves in a three-game set over the weekend, but they dropped the final game on Sunday afternoon.
Mark Vientos started the afternoon with a bang, launching a 402-foot two-run homer in the top of the second inning to open the scoring. Vientos is hitting .357/.387/.964 with five home runs and 11 RBIs over his last seven games.
The Braves responded with two runs in the sixth on a Sean Murphy single, and then two more runs in the eighth on a Jurickson Profar single. The Braves would hang on from there, winning the final game of the series 4-3.
The Mets are seven games behind the Phillies in the NL East, and have a 1.5-game lead over the Reds for the third Wild Card spot. The Phillies and Reds both won on Sunday.
New York now welcomes the first-place Phillies to town for a three-game set. Kodai Senga goes up against Cristopher Sánchez at 7:10 p.m. ET. Meanwhile, the Reds go to Los Angeles to face the Dodgers. Tune it at 10:10 p.m. ET for some late-night scoreboard watching.
