McClean’s Debut Fuels Mets in 3-1 Win

0 43

When you’re the New York Mets and you haven’t got much out of your starting rotation while spiraling, you make a call to Syracuse. Nolan McClean made his major league debut on Saturday as the Mets looked for something out of their rotation after Frankie Montas struggled and was sent to the bullpen. McClean pitched a really solid game in the Mets’ 3-1 win against the Seattle Mariners. Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, and Pete Alonso provided the scoring to give McClean his first major league win and the first Mets pitcher to get his first win at Citi Field since Steven Matz in 2015.

Nolan McClean Star of the Show

McClean provided the Mets and the fans with a little of everything in his debut. His fastball and curveball were electric as he struck out seven in 5 1/3 innings of work. His biggest thing was walks, and he walked four batters on the day. A big highlight from McClean was on the defensive side of things. McClean made a great behind-the-back grab on a Julio Rodgríguez ground ball to get a double play in the top of the 3rd inning. Overall, McClean gave the Mets exactly what they needed as they try to look for something out of their starting rotation in the middle of a playoff push.

Mets Bullpen Preserves Win For McClean

The bullpen for New York has struggled the last few games, including on Friday night. On Saturday, Gregory Soto and Edwin Díaz made sure McClean got his first win of his big league career. Soto came in the game for McClean with one out in the top of the 6th inning. He pitched 1 2/3 innings with two strikeouts. Diaz then went for a 6-out save, and he got the save despite giving up a solo home run to Eugenio Suárez

Lindor Stays Hot, Alonso Notches 100th RBI

Lindor has been hot over the last five games, and that’s good for the Mets if they want to make the playoffs. Wherever Lindor goes, they go. He continued his hot streak with a two-hit performance, including an RBI double to get the Mets on the board. The game remained 1-0 as the Mets left runners on base until the bottom of the 7th inning. Soto drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Alonso hit an RBI double for his 100th RBI of the season.

Player of the Game: Nolan McClean

McClean had an impressive debut with eight strikeouts and got his first win of his major league career.

On Deck

The Mets head to Williamsport for the Little League Classic on Sunday. Clay Holmes takes the mound for New York against the Mariners’ George Kirby. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN at 7:00 pm EDT and broadcast locally on WHSQ 880AM
