Mets Minors Recap: Benge Stays Red Hot

0 9

Carson Benge is making a serious case for a big-league look, sooner rather than later. The Mets’ No. 4 prospect continued his torrid stretch with another home run Sunday, his fifth in the last six games, and is now batting .370 with eight homers, 20 RBIs, and a 1.132 OPS in just 26 games at Double-A. With the major league offense still searching for consistency, Benge could offer a spark, much like Michael Conforto did in 2015. His hot bat might be exactly what the Mets need, down the stretch.

Triple-A

Syracuse Mets (57-51) 4, Buffalo Bisons (40-64) 3

Box Score

The bullpen locked things down with three scoreless innings to seal the win. Kevin Herget led the charge with two strong frames, allowing just one hit and striking out two. Richard Lovelady and Dylan Ross each followed with perfect innings of their own, both fanning a pair.

Double-A

Binghamton Rumble Ponies (68-32) 2, Harrisburg Senators (48-53) 0

Box Score

Carson Benge provided the big swing of the day, launching his eighth home run and driving in two to lead the offense. Nick Lorusso added a double in a 1-for-2 showing, continuing his hot stretch. Lorusso now has an eight-game hitting streak dating back to July 23, with eleven hits during said streak.

Jack Wenninger turned in a strong outing, tossing six scoreless innings while working around six hits and three walks, and striking out three. Joshua Cornielly followed with three shutout frames of his own, striking out three to secure the win and complete the shutout. Wenninger’s outing counted for his first quality start since July 6.

High-A

Jersey Shore BlueClaws (44-54) 3, Brooklyn Cyclones (60-42) 1

Box Score

The Cyclones struggled to generate offense, scattering just a few hits throughout the day. Colin Houck provided their only run with a game-tying sacrifice fly in the ninth. At the top of the order, A.J. Ewing stood out with a strong performance, going 3-for-5 at the top of the lineup.

Despite the offensive woes, the bullpen turned in a highly efficient performance. Brendan Girton allowed just one hit and one run over four innings, Ryan Ammons followed with two scoreless frames, and Dakota Hawkins struck out four across three innings while yielding only one earned run.

Single-A

St. Lucie Mets (60-41) 9, Daytona Tortugas  (46-55) 5

Box Score

Jeremy Rodriguez had a big day at the plate, driving in four runs with a double. Randy Guzman stayed hot with a 2-for-4 effort that included a double, while John Bay added a triple and two RBIs. Guzman now has five hits to start the month of August.

Jose Chirinos rebounded from his last outing with an impressive performance for St. Lucie, firing five scoreless innings while allowing just four hits and striking out six to earn his fourth win of the season.
