Home Run Surge Lifts Mets in 7-6 Comeback Win Over Orioles

The Mets (53-39) opened their six-game road trip on a high note Tuesday evening, rallying to beat the Orioles (40-50) 7-6 in 10 innings at Camden Yards. Powered by home runs from Ronnie Mauricio, Francisco Lindor, and Pete Alonso, the win marked New York’s biggest comeback of the season, overcoming a four-run deficit for the first time since 2024.

Clay Holmes got the start for the Mets and was sharp early, allowing just one run through five innings on a Jackson Holliday RBI single.

New York took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth. Ronnie Mauricio led off with a solo home run, his fourth of the season, to tie the game. Brett Baty and Brandon Nimmo followed with back-to-back doubles, bringing in another run and briefly putting the Mets in front.

Unfortunately, things unraveled for Holmes in the bottom of the sixth.  After hitting Holliday to lead off the frame, the starter gave up consecutive singles and a two-RBI double that gave Baltimore a one-run lead. A third single drove in two more runs, putting Baltimore ahead 5-2 and ending Holmes’ night. Richard Lovelady came in and got two outs, and Alex Carrillo, making his big league debut, entered to get the last out of the frame, which came via a pick-off from catcher Luis Torrens to third.

Carrillo returned for the seventh, but Holliday struck again with a one-out solo homer, extending the Orioles’ lead to 6-2.

The Mets responded in a big way with a four-spot in the eighth. Down by four, Nimmo singled to start a string of four straight hits. Lindor followed with a two-run homer to cut the deficit to 6-4. Juan Soto then singled, and Alonso launched his 21st home run of the year, a two-run shot, that tied the game at 6-6. It was Alonso’s 21st homer of the year, and 247th of his career, moving him within five of tying Darryl Strawberry’s all-time franchise record (252).

The “Fab Four,” as Steve Cohen called them after the game, put the Mets back in it.

Reed Garrett took over in the bottom of the frame and worked around a walk and a single to keep the game tied. Edwin Díaz followed with a scoreless ninth to send the game into extras.

In the top of the 10th, the Mets wasted no time. On the first pitch of the inning, Soto hit an RBI single to score Lindor, the automatic runner, that put New York ahead 7-6. Alonso followed with a single, and Jeff McNeil was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. But the Mets couldn’t tack on more, settling for a one-run lead.

Huascar Brazoban came on in the bottom of the 10th and closed the door, locking up the win for New York and securing his second career save.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Juan Soto

Juan Soto went 3-for-5 with the go-ahead RBI single in the 10th, a run scored, and two hits during the eighth-inning rally. Could he make the All-Star team after Ronald Acuña Jr.‘s recent injury?
