Another accolade for the Mariners catcher in his historic season

The Mariners announced today that Cal Raleigh has earned AL Player of the Month honors for June.

It’s the first monthly award in his career for Raleigh, who has also won the weekly award twice this season. Reportedly, he and Aaron Judge were both in conversation for the monthly award for May, but Judge edged out Cal for the top spot. Meanwhile, Cal earned his first Player of the Week award for that last week of May, but had to share it with the Rays’ Junior Caminero.

Raleigh earned his first solo Player of the Week honors for the week of June 16-22, in a five-homer week where he hit .417. For the month of June, he hit .300 with a league-leading slugging percentage (.690), tying Aaron Judge with 11 home runs.

It’s been a historic month for Raleigh, who has already set two MLB records in the first half of the season: most home runs before the All-Star Break by a catcher, passing Hall of Famer Johnny Bench (28 in 1970), and most home runs by a switch hitter before the All-Star Break, passing Mickey Mantle (29 in 1955 and 1961). Most impressively, he finished June with 33 home runs, the fifth player in MLB history to reach that mark before July 1, joining an incredibly impressive list of players: Ken Griffey Jr. (1998), Sammy Sosa (1998), Mark McGwire (1998) and Barry Bonds (2001).

Raleigh’s big month concluded with the news that he’s been selected to the All-Star game as a starter, the first Mariner to start an All-Star Game since Nelson Cruz in 2015, and the second Mariners catcher to ever be selected to the All-Star Game, joining his manager Dan Wilson.

“To me, when you look at it, it’s just the consistency with which he’s done this over the course of the first three months,” said Wilson. “It hasn’t been just one month where he exploded, it’s been pretty consistent over this whole stretch. Obviously his power numbers are up, but also his batting average is up. He’s been a more complete hitter this whole time, and that’s just another thing to marvel at, the consistency with which he’s done it.”

This is the first time a Mariners position player has earned Player of the Month honors since Julio Rodríguez did it in August of 2023.
