Brewers Rough Up Reed Garrett, Mets Lose Fourth Straight

0 3

Reed Garrett earned a sarcastic cheer, then boos during a disastrous outing that was the turning point in the Mets’ 7-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers at Citi Field Wednesday in the first game of a doubleheader.

Garrett entered with one out in the sixth as the Mets led 2-1. The club’s advantage was gone one pitch later, however, when Brice Turang doubled in a run. Isaac Collins followed with a single and Jake Bauers walked, bringing Joey Ortiz to the plate with the bases loaded.

Garrrett ran the count to 3-0 on Ortiz before throwing a called strike, which elicited a sarcastic cheer from the afternoon crowd. Ortiz hit the next pitch for a grand slam, which gave Milwaukee a 6-2 lead and brought the boos. The crowd jeered again when Garrett (2-4) retired the side. The damage was already done.

Garrett’s ERA was 0.00 in March/April, 1.38 in May, 7.36 in June and he’s now given up four earned runs in 2/3 of an inning (54.50 ERA) to start July.

Garrett came on in relief of Clay Holmes, who was the first Mets starter to get an out in the sixth inning since Kodai Senga on June 12.

With the win, the Brewers (48-37) passed the Mets (48-38) in the standings. The free-falling Mets have lost 14 out of 17, their worst 17-game stretch in seven years. Over the last 20 seasons, there have only been two other 17-game samples that were as bad as this one, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. They were in July 2012 and June 2018.

The Mets were held to two hits, scoring runs on a Brett Baty sacrifice fly in the third and a Pete Alonso RBI single in the fourth.

Juan Soto stole a base to become the fifth MLB player with 20 homers and 10 steals this year. The others are Shohei Ohtani, James Wood, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Corbin Carroll. Soto’s career high in stolen bases is 12.

Soto’s OPS in June was 1.196, the second-best in Mets history for a calendar month. The best was Darryl Strawberry (1.209 in June 1990, minimum 100 plate appearances).

Stat of the Game

Francisco Lindor‘s OPS in wins this year was 1.006 entering Wednesday. In losses, it was .460. He went 0-for-4 this afternoon.

Player of the Game

Holmes gave up two runs on three hits over 5 1/3 innings. He walked four and struck out one. He allowed a home run to Sal Frelick on the second pitch of the game. He has given up 11 homers in his last 10 starts. He didn’t allow any in his first seven.

On Deck

Game 2 of the doubleheader is set for 7:10 p.m. ET on SNY. Rookie Blade Tidwell (0-1, 10.13 ERA) faces rookie flamethrower Jacob Misiorowski (3-0. 1.13 ERA), whose average four-seam fastball velocity through three starts is at 99.6 mph.
