Griffin Canning joined the list of injured New York Mets pitchers after he exited Thursday’s game against the Atlanta Braves early with what the Mets said is a left ankle injury. He is set to undergo imaging of the foot.
Canning pitched just 2 2/3 innings, giving up just one hit and striking out three before he went down after throwing a pitch with two outs. He threw just 36 pitches. He was helped off the field and struggled to move his left leg as he was helped off.

Canning adds to the Mets’ pitching woes in terms of pitchers down with injuries:
- Sean Manaea has been out with an oblique injury since spring. He was expected to play catch for the first time Thursday after recently learning he had a loose body in his left elbow.
- Kodai Senga went down during his last start with a hamstring injury and is expected to be out for four to six weeks.
- Frankie Montas missed over two months with a lat injury before returning to the mound this week.
- Tylor Megill is dealing with an elbow strain.
- Max Kranick hit the injured list with an elbow strain.
- Now Griffin Canning goes down with an ankle injury.
Should Canning end up on the injured list, it is likely the Mets will turn to Triple-A Syracuse and pull a player up as the roster transaction in conjunction with putting Canning on the IL. Blade Tidwell is a pitcher who could be called up again. He was in line to pitch for Triple-A Syracuse on Thursday, but that game was rained out.
Tidwell, who made his MLB debut last month on May 4, has thrown in two games for the Mets this season. He is 0-1 with a 9.82 ERA. He’s thrown 7 1/3, giving up eight earned runs on 13 hits, including a home run.
Mets top pitching prospect Nolan McLean has yet to make his major league debut, but has excelled this season with a 2.19 ERA in 13 games between Double-A and Triple-A Syracuse.
So far this season, Canning is 7-3 with a 3.77 ERA in 16 starts. He has struck out 70 over the course of 76 1/3 innings.
